How to Create a Burn Rate Chart in Google Slides (And See Your Runway Clearly)

July 9, 2026

The clock is always ticking.

If you’re running a startup or managing a budget, you know the feeling. That low-level anxiety about "Day Zero"—the day the money runs out. Your two most important financial metrics are your burn rate (how much cash you spend per month) and your runway (how many months you have left).

Staring at these numbers in a spreadsheet is one thing. Seeing them visualized is another. A burn rate chart turns an abstract financial model into a tangible, powerful story. It's the single most effective way to communicate your financial health to your team, your board, and yourself.

But creating a professional-looking, updatable chart in Google Slides? That’s usually a pain. You build it in Sheets, copy-paste it as an image, and then have to repeat the whole process every time the numbers change.

We built ExtraChart to fix that. Here’s how you can create a clear, compelling burn rate chart without ever leaving your presentation.

Why a Chart Beats a Spreadsheet Every Time

Your financial runway isn't just a number; it's a trendline. A well-designed chart instantly answers critical questions:

  • Is our burn rate accelerating or slowing down?
  • How did that big hire in Q2 affect our runway?
  • Are our cost-saving measures actually working?

When you put this on a slide, it focuses the conversation. It’s no longer about a cell in a spreadsheet; it’s about the slope of a line. It’s about survival.

Building Your Burn Rate Chart in 5 Steps

Let's get this done. We're going to create a chart that shows your cash balance decreasing over time. The best visual for this is often an Area Chart, as it makes the remaining balance feel solid and tangible.

First, if you haven't already, install ExtraChart from the Google Workspace Marketplace. It’s free to get started.

Step 1: Launch ExtraChart

Once installed, open your Google Slides presentation. Go to the menu and click Extensions -> ExtraChart -> Create & Edit Charts. The ExtraChart sidebar will pop up with all your chart options.

Step 2: Select the Area Chart

A simple Line Chart also works well, but we’ll use the Area Chart. It provides a great visual weight to your remaining cash. Click on the Area Chart icon to open the editor.

Step 3: Enter Your Financial Data

The ExtraChart editor will open with a real-time preview on the left and a data editor on the right. You only need two columns:

  1. Month: The time period.
  2. Cash Balance: Your cash on hand at the end of that month.

You can type the data in directly, but the real magic is the copy-paste. Just copy your two columns from Google Sheets or Excel and paste them directly into the ExtraChart data editor.

Here’s some sample data you can use:

| Month | Cash Balance | |---------|--------------| | Jan-26 | 250000 | | Feb-26 | 225000 | | Mar-26 | 200000 | | Apr-26 | 175000 | | May-26 | 150000 | | Jun-26 | 125000 |

The preview on the left will update instantly. You’ll see a nice downward-sloping chart forming.

Step 4: Customize for Maximum Impact

Now, let's make it look professional. Click over to the Settings tab.

  • Colors: A single, strong brand color works well. Or, you could use a red-to-orange gradient to subtly emphasize the "burn." Our Color Palette Manager makes this easy.
  • Axes & Labels: Give your Y-axis a clear title, like "Cash Balance ($)." Ensure the font size is legible for a presentation.
  • Gridlines: Sometimes, less is more. Consider turning off minor gridlines to keep the focus on the trend itself.

Step 5: Insert and (Crucially) Update

Click the "Create" button. ExtraChart will insert a crisp, high-resolution image of your burn rate chart directly onto your slide.

Now for the best part. Next month, when you have new numbers, you don't have to start over. Just click on the chart image you inserted and re-open ExtraChart (Extensions -> ExtraChart -> Create & Edit Charts). The add-on will automatically load your data and settings exactly as you left them.

Simply add the new month's data, hit "Update," and your chart is refreshed in place. No more copy-pasting. No more rebuilding.

Stop Guessing, Start Visualizing

A burn rate chart is more than just a graph; it's your company's heartbeat monitor. It gives you the clarity to make tough decisions, communicate with stakeholders, and plan for the future.

By building it directly in Google Slides with ExtraChart, you save time and create a single source of truth for your most critical metric. Stop wrestling with spreadsheets and start telling a clear financial story.
